KEITH OLBERMAN WINS SENATE SEAT

Can you imagine that? If you did not have access or stomach to listen to Air America you may not know that Al Franken is every bit the equivalent to Keith Olberman when it comes to vile attacks and utter disregard for truth. When Al Sharpton ran for President on the Democratic Party ticket I thought it a bit humorous. But Sharpton, despite his chosen carreer as a racal opportunist, is somehow a likeable guy. He doesn't hate white people and is not out to destroy them. This Al is just a minor embarassment to the Democratic Party.

But the other Al is viscious. He dishonest in financial matters, google it. He slanders and does his best to destroy those not sharing his political persuasion. That a major American political party could nominate, support and elect a man like Franken to the US Senate is is a disgrace to the party.

CORRUPTION AT AIG

Was it corruption that brought down AIG ?

No it was not. AIG was brought down by excessive holdings of derivative securities, primarily those known as Credit Default Swaps. It is an over simplification, but one could say Credit Default Swaps are a form of insurance against loss due to defaulted debt, i.e. mortgage foreclosures. They were on the wrong side of a monumental bet.

Was there corruption? Yes, but it was not responsible for the fall. It came after the fall, in an effort to save the company. There is no widely recognized value for these esoteric instruments. They do not trade in a high volume auction market like common stock. AIG continued to value their derivative holdings at prior levels, not recognizing the depleted value on their books.

AIG may not have been squeaky clean but they certainly were not Enron corrupt.

If it wasn’t corruption that brought them down, what was it?
Bad Risk Management.

Was taxpayer money required to bail out AIG ?

No, not one red cent. Polls showed the public recognized this but our politicians did not. In a properly functioning free market system Darwinism prevails. Governments do not infuse capital into companies that engage in failing practices, that’s intervention, not free market. Indeed, taxpayer money was used but it was not required. It was a choice made by elected representatives who, once again, failed to represent our interests.

HOPE OR CHANGE

"It is a gloomy moment in the history of our country. Not in the lifetime of most men has there been so much grave and deep apprehension; never has the future seemed so incalculable as at this time. The domestic economic situation is in chaos. Our dollar is weak throughout the world. The political cauldron seethes and bubbles with uncertainty. Russia hangs, as usual, like a cloud, dark and silent, upon the horizon. It is a solemn moment. Of our troubles no man has seen the end."
Harper's Magazine  1847

Dare we Hope our beloved land will once again triumph over trouble as it did in the wake of Harper's nineteenth century view?
Or is Change changing our path to that once trod by Rome?

"The Budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, assistance to foreign lands should be reduced lest the State become bankrupt. The people should ... work and not depend on government for subsistence."
Marcus Tullius Cicero   106 BC

So you see, some things just don't change much over time, even a very long time. I'll bet that Madison, Adams, Jefferson and that whole crowd understood as much when they formulated the Constitution.

THE WORLD SQUARE DANCE

"World turn Right, we turn Left, all join hands and dosado,
World look up, we look down, that's where we go,
Now grab your partner, swing around and dosodo"

You young'uns may never have been to a Square Dance. Try it. You might like it. It's early Rap where the audience dances in response to the Rap. At least Google it so you will know what dosado is.

Europe is coming into their election season now.

Germany moves Right. Merkel's conservative Christian Democrat party is leading the Social Democrats.

France moves Right. Sarkozy's conservative UMP party is leading in the polls, ahead of the Socialist Party.

Italy moves Right. Berlusconi's Freedom Peoples Party has a 2 digit lead over the Center Left opponent.

Britain's Labour Party is in deep doodoo, (not to be confused with dosado). They are given little chance in the next general election.

Greece and Portugal are leaning Left, but neither is exactly a great world power.

So that's Europe. Europeans were rebelling against what their Socialistic governments had wrought when they elected Merkel and Sarkozy. It's encouraging to see the trend continue.

Then there's China. When Hong Kong reverted to China the nation turned from pure Communism, which is nothing more than ultimate Socialism, to Capitalism, albeit with a heavy governmental hand.  From Marxist Communism to Capitalism and look what happened , wow!

Now the Russian press is laughing at us in print exclaiming that while they have finally recognized Marxism as a miserable failure the US is racing at breakneck speed toward it.

Eastern Europe gets little attention. If you know anyone who lived there under Marxist Communism ask them what they thought about it. Expect a bitter denouncement.
Other nations have learned their lessons and are moving Right. We take our freedoms and prosperity for granted and move Left.

DOES OBAMA REALLY LOATHE AMERICA ?

From a UK newspaper, the Telegraph
No leader in American history has gone to greater lengths than Barack Obama to make amends for his own country. From condemnation of American “arrogance” in a speech in Strasbourg to acknowledging U.S. “mistakes” before millions of Muslims on Arab television, Obama has rarely missed an opportunity to apologise for the actions of the American people.

President Obama has elevated the art of national self-loathing to new heights, and seems to delight in prostrating the most powerful nation on the face of the earth before its critics and rivals, especially on foreign soil.”

From Michelle Obama
Upon the nomination of her husband,
“I have never been proud of America until now”

From Barack Obama’s chosen spiritual leader for 20 years
“God damn America ! “
Rev Wright’s Liberation Theology was twice condemned by the Pope for it’s Marxist foundation.

From Obama’s community organizing comrade
I only regret we did not do even more bombing (paraphrased)

Minutia ?
Obama banishes the bust of Churchill from the White House and sends it back to Britain.
Obama thanks Hugo Chavez for a book condemning America.
Obama accepts without comment the display of a Che Guevera poster prominently displayed in a local campaign office.
Obama launched his Senatorial campaign from the home of a man who in 2001 told the New York Times that the notion of the United   States as a just and fair and decent place “makes me want to puke.”
In New Orleans “ we had to realize that we were no longer the America we had hoped to be". Obama added "But here's the good news: America was ashamed and shocked." If a man respected his country would he see shame as good news?

From the Russian newspaper PRAVDA
"like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed."
"The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama"

Does this not all add up to something?
Who is this man? What are his real goals?
Prelutsky says watch out for a 28th amendment to end the two term limit.
But if his goal is limited to President of the United States of America:
Why does he spend so much time courting and pandering to the rest of the world?
Why does he bow down before the King of Saudi Arabia.
Why does he say America could be considered to be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world?
Why did he see his nomination as “ the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Are we to ignore all the signs?
Is it time to question the idea that “It cannot happen in America” ?

KRUGMAN BLAMES REAGAN

The Nobel Prize winning economic journalist Paul Krugman in a June first NYT op ed piece headlined “Reagan Did It” puts the onus for today’s economic debacle on Ronald Reagan. This begs the question, is brother Paul recovering from BDS only to come down with RDS.

Bright guy that Krugman. He knows who his real opposition is. Bush is no hero to conservatives, Reagan is. Bush is gone, Reagan lives. He lives in the hearts of conservatives everywhere, from middle Americans who love their country and its heritage to Eastern Europeans who have suffered the ravages of Marxism, the very antithesis of Conservatism.

The Krug’s argument is Reagan signed a Bill into law whose primary sponsors were senators Gann (R), St Germain (D), Schumer (D) and Hoyer (D). The bill passed easily through a Democratic controlled House and Senate. Krugman is correct in concluding it was deregulatory and had unfavorable consequences. But for a bright guy like Krugman to say “the prime villains behind the mess we’re in were Reagan and his circle of advisors” is beyond ignorance. It is disingenuous and that is a relative compliment.

It is frustrating to see the damage Democratic leaders are doing to this country. It enrages me when they blame it on others.

PRAVDA
Did you catch the item in PRAVDA ?  Google "American capitalism gone with a whimper".
Excerpts:
"like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxixm is happening with breath taking speed"
"the population was dumbed down through a politicized an subtandard system based on pop culture"
"their faith in God was destroyed", [their ministers joining the]  "side of one pseudo Marxist politician or another"
"The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama"

There is an old expression, "From the mouths of babes .....", oft concluded, "comes the wisdom and wit of youth."  Now from the Press of the once oppressed comes the wisdom of experience.

MARXISM VS CAPITALISM, the answer

The core difference is the goal.

Marxism seeks equal status for all. Capitalism seeks equal opportunity for all.

The two are not just incompatible, they are mutually destructive. Marx declared “from everyone according to their ability, to everyone according to their need”. To achieve equal status the fruits of a more productive person’s labor must be taken away from him and distributed among those of lesser achievement. Equal status can only be reached by unequal treatment.

The Free Market system known as Capitalism inspires achievement because the achiever is given the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of his own achievement. Equality of opportunity is equality of treatment. Marxism, on the other hand, accepts inequality of treatment in order to create equality of status.

Equal status, equal opportunity and equal treatment cannot co-exist.

Winston Churchill said it well when he quipped  "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."

Or to paraphrase John Hawkins “It is better to be poor with the opportunity to become wealthy through your own efforts, than to be poor with limited opportunity to improve your status restricted to sharing your fate with almost everyone else.”

ABOUT THOSE JETS

By now we all know some corporate execs used their company jets to fly to DC.
I for one do not expect such high level corporate executives to submit to commercial airline hassles.
Nor do I expect high level political leaders to do so either. Despite the fact they are both may be failing in their jobs.

Corporate execs are answerable to those who choose to be stockholders, not to politicians.
Elected politicians have a greater obligation. They are answerable to every American taxpayer.

Pelosi has access to an Air Force plane large enough to accommodate staff, family, supporters, and members of the California delegation when she travels around the country. However she has requested routine access to a larger plane.. One that includes 42 business class seats, a fully-enclosed state room, an entertainment center, a private bed, state-of-the-art communications system, and a crew of 16. Pelosi wanted "carte blanche for use of such an aircraft any time", including weekend trips home to San Francisco. She, for one, has no business criticizing how corporate executives spend their stockholders money.

Thankfully the Jewish community has the perfect word for this, hutzpah. It saves me from having to use a less discreet term not really applicable to Nancy's gender.

CAPITALISM vs MARXISM

This is a test. No, not a test of the Emergency Internet Online system. There will be no 30 second 60 cycle hum. And relax, it’s just a one question test.

While you prepare, permit me to ramble, an on topic ramble. Capitalism is about a free market system, not about capital. Hayek called it the “extended economy” because it was economic liberty extended to everyone. So who coined the term Capitalism? Oops, sorry! I said there would only be one question and that wasn’t it; so here’s the answer. It was Karl Marx. Presumably he thought “Free Markets” would not move the crowd in his direction as much as would the populist term “Capitalism”.

Stop relaxing. Tense up. Here’s the test.

What is THE prime difference between Marxism and that system Marx called Capitalism ??
Clue #1 – both call for equality.
Clue #2 – Google for Marx’s most famous quote

I will give my answer in my next post. In the meantime what is your answer ?

WE HAVE MIN WAGE, NOW COMES MAX WAGE

3/21/09
AIG Bonuses 218M, not 165M ?
CT AG Blumenthal says so.

The Obama budget
Will create the largest spending deficit since WWII, as a percentage of GDP
9.3 trillion in 10 years
This according to the Int’l Herald Tribune/Reuters
Obama’s promise is to reduce the estimated 1.3T deficit he inherited for 2008 to .5T by 2012. Let us take that Obama promise of .5T at the end of 4 years (A) and the Trib/Reuters forecast of 9.3T at the end of 10 years (B). Then let us calculate what would be entailed to get from A to B. Here's the math...  .5 to 9.3 is a gain of 8.8 over 6 years, an average of nearly 1.5 per year, or nearly 300% of .5

In plain English an annual increase of nearly triple the 2012 deficit, every year for 6 years

Government to determine how much you can earn ?
Caveat – as I write, this is developing, not a fait accompli. However it comes via Drudge
and according to Drudge from the NYT, both reputable sources.

This is too important and too significant to paraphrase so I quote Drudge
“Obama will call for increased oversight of 'executive pay at all banks, Wall
Street firms and possibly other companies'
Possibly other companies? Possibly other companies!! Is this not the very definition of  Mussolinic Fascism, private enterprise but with State control.

Update: From the Herald Tribune, confirms what Drudge reported http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/03/22/america/22regulate.php

London Financial Times likens Obama attack on business to McCarthy witch hunt
Senior executives on both sides of the Atlantic on Friday warned of an exodus of talent from some of the biggest names in US finance, saying the “anti-American” measures smacked of “a McCarthy witch-hunt” that would send the country “back to the stone age”.

Today’s question
There is obviously something suspect about the mathematical conclusion above regarding the budget deficits. Obama’s promise is explicit and specific (though I have rounded it to one decimal place), Reuters forecast is specific and was prepared by the Congressional Budget Office. I believe the math is correct. So exactly what is wrong with this picture? Certainly Obama does not intend to bankrupt the nation, does he?

FNM to pay bonuses also

The Washington Post reports that Fannie Mae plans to pay four top executives $1 million or more in retention bonuses. The Post helpfully explains that a fifth of this money was paid in 2008. The four Fannie Mae executives will receive about 60 percent of the remaining funds this year and, depending on performance, as much as 40 percent next year.

AIG – The other view

US of A and E ?

The views of Charles Murray and David Brooks on the all-important question of whether the United States soon will become very much like Europe. Murray, in an address to the American Enterprise Institute, argued that there exists the real possibility that irreversible damage will be done to the American project over the next few years. Brooks, in a New York Times column, argued that America 's cultural DNA ensures that we will never be Europe, but rather will remain a vibrant commercial republic.

Connecticut’s Dodd changes story

From knowing nothing about language in his amendment to protect AIG executive bonuses to having put the bonus protection measure in specifically under pressure from the Treasury Dept.

Stimulus bill earmark of the day

$935,000 to pasteurize eggs.  Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) MI

Do egg processors really need government assistance to pasteurize eggs ?

Aren't they doing it already?

Where's the stimulus?

Daily Question
Obama, Emmanuel and Pelosi have all said they do not want this financial crisis to go to waste. The Right interprets this to mean we (the Left) have an opportunity to exploit the crisis to legislate our agenda in the apple pie name of stimulus. I ask those on the Left, how do you interpret the idea that it would be a shame to let a crisis go to waste ?

QUOTES and QUIPS

Life
Life is a sexually transmitted, and ultimately fatal, disease

Greed
“Politicians never accuse you of 'greed' for wanting other people's money --- only for wanting to keep your own money”.
    [ Joseph Sobran ]
ACLU
“I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control of those who produce wealth: Communism is the goal!.”    [ Roger Baldwin, founder of the ACLU ]

Government
“The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out to groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods.”  [ H. L. Mencken ]

The individual
"Comrades! We must abolish the cult of the individual decisively, once and for all."
   [ Nikita Khrushchev , February 25, 1956 20th Congress of the Communist Party ]

"We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society."

WHO IS ERIC HOLDER ?

The One has chosen Eric Holder to be his Attorney General. The editors at National Review Online have defined him as a horrendous choice. Here is a summary with some key excerpts from their editorial.

Holder was the Clinton administration’s last deputy attorney general, succeeding Jamie Gorelick in 1997 under Janet Reno.

He is convinced justice in America needs to be “established” rather than enforced; he’s excited about hate crimes and enthusiastic about the constitutionally dubious Violence Against Women Act; he’s a supporter of affirmative action and a practitioner of the statistical voodoo that makes it possible to burden police departments with accusations of racial profiling and the states with charges of racially skewed death-penalty enforcement

He favors ending the detentions of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay

He favors income redistribution to address the supposed root causes of crime.

Supported the infamous Clinton pardons including that of Marc Rich

In 1999, over the objections of the FBI, the Bureau of Prisons, and prosecuting attorneys, Holder supported Clinton’s commutation of the sentences of 16 FALN conspirators [Puerto Rican terrorists]

Equally noxious were the stealthy pardons of Susan Rosenberg and Linda Evans, Weather Underground [members] associated with Obama’s friends Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, issued on the same day as the Rich pardon.

This is a very bad start indeed.

REALLY RANDOM

Travel
I am back from Europe, specifically Bavaria and Prague. For those in Rio Linda Bavaria is south western Germany, and Prague is no longer in Czechoslovakia. They didn’t move the city they just changed the nation. That happens often in Europe.

The B in Bavaria must stand for Beautiful because it certainly is. Prague is another story. It is Bohemia, you see it and sense it. Bohemia is the northern part of the Czech Republic. Unsophisticated wretch that I am, for years I thought Bohemia was, like Transylvania, found only in Bela Lugosi movies. As anywhere, many of the people were delightful, but if I were asked to describe the Czechians in one word  the word would be "rude".

Politics
Europe is moving to the Right with the likes of Merkel, Sarkozy and that guy in Italy while the US has just chosen to be led to the Left. Like nations on opposite escalators I believe we have past each other. We, of cours, are on the Down escalator.

Why is Europe finally rejecting Socialism? Could it be because they have experienced the results and chose “change”?

More perplexing is the question, why did the US choose the Left turn? Do the voters realize they have chosen to elect the most Liberal government in the history of the country? Could it be the demographics have changed so much that this direction is now our destiny? Could it be due to the media having become so biased that it's the media that really determines the outcome? Or...?

On the poignant side

HOW DEMOCRACIES PERISH

We Lost. I am leaving the country, today !!

But I will be back Nov 15th following the completion of a family celebration in Europe. Next Post will be after the 15th.

For reading I am bringing "How Democrocies Perish" writen by French intellectual Jean Francois Revel.
Circa 1984 Revel journeyed to the US for the first time, fully expecting to find the country as depicted in all his readings. His image was so shattered by exposure to reality that he wound up writing a book totally diferrent the from the scathing indictment he had planned.

I will write a review if anyone asks for it.
